Our
Programs Work! |
|
| |
In
November of 2003, Fitness Stylz began introducing
the New Zealand-based, Les Mills group fitness programs
to our local community. Today, we offer four programs,
including BODYPUMP, BODYSTEP,
BODYFLOW and BODYCOMBAT.
Each program is designed to challenge your body in a different
way, but they all have at least one thing in common: They
work!
Fitness Stylz members of all ages and fitness
levels are experiencing the host of benefits these programs
provide, such as fat-loss, improved cholesterol, lower
blood pressure, protection from osteoporosis, and increased
strength, energy and flexibility.
Here are just a few of their success stories. We hope
you enjoy them, and we extend the warm welcome for you
to visit our studio and give our programs a try. Your
first class of each Les Mills program is always free,
with no obligation to join.

I
Lost
100 Pounds!
Stephanie
Freeman
|
 |
|
| |
| Stephanie Freeman shares
100-pound weight loss story:
My name is Stephanie Freeman. I am 27 yrs old and I
have lost 101 pounds. It started when I wanted to lose
76 pounds for my wedding. As I tried on wedding dresses,
I realized I was putting on size 24. I weighed 250 pounds.
I decided that I wanted to be a beautiful, healthy woman
when I got married, so I would have many wonderful years
with my husband!
I started by exercising, and walked everyday. I wanted
to make sure I could stick with it before I spent money
to join a gym. I knew I also had to do something about
my eating habits! I was eating more than my husband, and
none of the food was good for me. After two months I was
walking 2 miles and doing 100 crunches a day. I gave up
soda and started drinking water. I began eating breakfast,
rather than a big lunch and supper, and cut down on my
portions. At that point I decided that I would check out
Fitness Stylz.
First I went online and looked at the website and I saw
Leslie Bull’s success story and thought, “I
could do that if I wanted to.” So, I went to Fitness
Stylz when it was still down behind the Dollar Store,
and the first person I met was Andrea who welcomed me
right away and gave me the tour. She educated me on the
different classes they offered, which at the time was
only Body Step and Body Pump. I purchased a year membership
that day, and tried Body Step class.
I had no idea what the class was going to be like and
was a little nervous, but and the instructor (Leanna)
came right up and introduced herself. She was very happy
to see me there, and was a very positive reinforcement
all the way through class, and at the end of class came
up to me and praised me for how I had done. From that
point on, I knew I was going to LOVE this place! (Don’t
get me wrong -- I got home that night and my calves hurt
like they had never hurt before, and for two days after
that, but I knew that it was GOOD pain and that it was
working!)
At this point had lost 15 of the 76 pounds I wanted to
lose, and was excited to try Body Pump. That’s where
I met Chris and Leslie, who were also very nice to me
and spoke to me after class about how I did in class.
I got a chance to speak to Leslie about her success, and
was even more excited to keep coming back to the gym.
I was being very strict on myself about my eating habits
as I had an over- eating disorder. I stopped eating after
6:00 pm. I found that between the exercising and the eating
right, I was sleeping better and moving better, and feeling
better about myself in general.
I stuck with it, and lost 70 of the 76 pounds I wanted
to lose for my wedding and was wearing a size 16 wedding
dress – not size 24 -- the day that I got married.
I was so happy, and felt like the most beautiful girl
in the world!
Then came the honeymoon. Let’s just say I ate what
I wanted the whole week. When I came home, I continued
to eat what I wanted and didn’t go back to the gym.
In six months, I gained 16 of the pounds back and my clothes
were not fitting. I told myself that I had to have some
sort of a goal to attain in order to make myself go back
to the gym, and start eating right! I decided that goal
would be to become a Body Step instructor. I knew if I
did that, it would be something that I would be dedicated
to for the rest of my life, and I knew it had to be a
life-long change if I wanted to keep losing rather then
gaining.
I went back to Fitness Stylz and told everyone it was
an “extended” honeymoon, but they did not
judge me. They were all just happy to see me again! At
that point I told Tom Roy that I wanted to be a step instructor,
and he told me to keep doing what I had been doing and
I could be. So I got right back into it and was pushing
a little too hard.
I was working out 8 to 11 hours weekly, and started to
have pains that I never had before. Joyce, Tom, and Andrea
told me that I was pushing myself too hard. I felt defeated.
But again, the staff and members of Fitness Stylz were
positive reinforcement and advised that I take a week
off and come back. I did, then re-started with 4 hours
a week, and increased to 6 hours a week, which I decided
was the correct amount for me.
Since then, I have lost the 16 pounds that I gained on
the long honeymoon, plus 31 more, and I feel so much better
about everything in life. I can breathe better, and have
SO much more energy than I ever did. I no longer have
an over-eating disorder, as I feel better about myself.
I have pizza once and while, and ice cream in the summer
is a must, but just not every night. I have learned that
you can have what you want and be healthy about it, and
that exercise should be a regular part of your life so
you can live a long and healthy life.
I could not have done this without the support of my family
and friends. They all have supported me through this and
are very happy with the changes that I have made, as they
can see that I am a happier person. A BIG THANKS to the
people at Fitness Stylz! I tell everyone I know about
this gym, and would encourage any and all to try any of
the classes just once and you will be hooked!
Today, as I type this, I
have been married for exactly one year and have lost 101
pounds in 2.5 years. I plan to train to be a Body Step
instructor very soon, and I am looking forward to it.
I cannot wait to be part of the team that has helped so
many people in the community.

“I
joined Fitness Stylz in January of 2005. I was
5’10”, 215 pounds and 47 years old. I was suffering
from mid-life anxiety attacks, sleeping horribly, and I
couldn’t bear to look at photos of myself. I was so
large and unhealthy-looking in them.
“I loved the very first BODYPUMP
class and every one since. The music and the moves made
the hour fly by. It felt like only twenty minutes had passed,
and we were done! The first week, I could only groan and
laugh at how sore I was. I had been warned about this and
had the expert assurance from gym owner Tom Roy and the
wonderful staff that this was to be expected and would pass.
Boy, they were right! Then, it felt so awesome to be doing
something good for myself after all the years of inactivity.
“After one year, I had lost some inches, five pounds,
one clothing size, slept better and had more energy. My
husband noticed a big improvement and was very supportive,
but I wanted something more.
“I hadn’t modified my terrible eating habits
and I decided to change that. At first, I experimented.
Without telling anyone (in case I failed), I started eating
more veggies and some fruit. I had Cherrios and a banana
instead of an English muffin slathered in peanut butter
for breakfast. I still have breakfast sandwiches, too, but
only once in a while. I tried, and thoroughly enjoyed, a
BODYCOMBAT class once a week, but couldn’t
give up on my beloved BODYPUMP twice a
week. I kept those two BODYPUMP classes
for this busy summer and continued to lose pounds and inches.
“I love to go out to eat, love to eat period! I just
eat a little better! And this Fall I will be able to do
three BODYPUMP classes a week again. I’ve
gone from a size 18/20 to a size 12 and have said “bye-bye”
to over 50 pounds so far!
“People have noticed and have said nice things. A
dear friend asked if I was getting tired of people commenting
on my change of appearance all the time. Heck, NO!
My favorite compliment is that I look ten years younger.
I feel ten years younger. Only I wasn’t this strong
and toned when I was 38!
“Thanks so much to all the phenomenal instructors
and fellow members at Fitness Stylz! What a great
group of people! I’m gonna keep this going!”

Great
Results in Knee Rehab with BODYFLOW |
Jeff
Lavin |
| |
| Jeff Lavin shares his story: |
| |
I'm Jeff Lavin. For the
past few years, I've been out chasing, living and loving
the professional snowboarding dream. With any sport, there's
a chance of getting injured. Dec 16th, 2006, I blew my knee
out at Breckenridge, Colorado. After the bad news, I made
the trip home to have surgery and be near family and friends
for support.
My Surgery was on January 18th of this year. When you go
through a procedure such as ACL (anterior cruciate ligament)
reconstructive surgery, it takes roughly 6 months to fully
recover strength, agility and to even think about returning
to an active lifestyle. Once you blow/rupture a ligament,
there's no repairing it. With ACLs, you have basically three
options as far as grafts go. You can get a Patella Tendon
graft of the front of your knee, a hamstring graft, or a
cadaver graft of either of the two previous methods mentioned.
There's a weak stage at 8-12 weeks out where you can re-injure
yourself and be back at square one.
After I made it past the first two weeks, I came to Fitness
Stylz to use the bike and gym for rehab. I also picked up
a key pass so I could have a flexible schedule. At five
to six weeks after my surgery, I was getting bored with
just using the gym. I asked my Physical Therapist if I could
do BODYPUMP and he gave the ‘green light.’ The
one thing he told me was to just stay away from weighted
squats and lunges. I hit my first class on Tuesday with
Leslie Bull, whose BODYPUMP class I had taken previously.
My good numbers in physical therapy started increasing rapidly
every week.
One day after class, I saw BODYFLOW. I checked it out from
behind the studio window a couple of times. It interested
me and I jumped into the mix. I figured if anything didn't
feel right I could back off and not go for all the "challenge
moves." I've done yoga before with snowboarding to
extend my flexibility. FLOW looked similar with a few moves,
Tai Chi, Pilates, etc. By the time class was through, I
was amazed by how limber my body was and how easy it was
to move around.
Eight weeks into FLOW, the numbers were increasing and I
was doing things that people usually can't do that soon
after ACL reconstructive surgery. I erred a bit on the conservative
side when doing certain moves, and sometimes I wouldn't
give it my all if I felt that my knees couldn’t handle
it that day. It was really opening me up to be more hypersensitive
to how my body felt throughout my rehab. I continued to
hit at least two PUMP and two FLOW classes a week. I spent
four days a week hitting my rehab circuit as well.
By the time I made it past 12 weeks, what doctors consider
as the most critical healing stage, I was ‘good to
go.’ My good numbers were ahead of the game by two
months! At this point, I could push my rehab more. My doctors
made a few suggestions of how I could push my rehab program
and BODYSTEP came up. So I jumped in the STEP program to
try that out as well. I was hitting at least three classes
of FLOW, PUMP, and STEP a week along with my rehab circuit.
By the time I was at four months out from surgery, I was
hitting all four of the Les Mills programs offered at Fitness
Stylz, including BODYCOMBAT. My knee was feeling stronger
everyday. By the time I hit five months, my doctor gave
me the ‘green light’ to get back on my snowboard.
My evaluation testing numbers where some of the highest
numbers that the staff members of Orthopedic Associates
have seen in their careers!
Of all four of the programs, I feel that FLOW has helped
out my rehab program the most. You spend more time in certain
positions, holding them for longer periods of time, versus
weight lifting and squats. It's great to get the inner feeling
of self that FLOW offers as well. BODYFLOW has brought my
flexibility a new level.
Let’s not forget the most important part of these
past few months… I never would have had these results
without the awesome instructors and the Fitness Stylz staff!
I've been to a few gyms over the years. Sometimes a few
people remember your face and say “hi,” but
it doesn't go much further than that. The dynamic at Fitness
Stylz is unique in its own regard. The instructors and staff
truly care about your personal goals and for you as a person.
When you join Fitness Stylz, you’re not just joining
a gym—you’re joining a family! When it comes
time to get back on my board in August, I'd love to pack
everyone up and take them with me. Thanks to every member
for your kind words and encouragement. Believe in the Les
Mills programs, the staff, and, most importantly, believe
in yourself!

“I have been coming
to Fitness Stylz for over a year, because my doctor said
it was crucial that I do something about my health. Since
July of 2006, I have lost over 43 pounds and my total cholesterol
has dropped 38 points!
“I spend six days a week in the gym, Monday through
Friday, twice a day, and Saturday morning. I use the weight
room three days a week, and I use the tread mill the other
three.
“I take BODYCOMBAT four to five times a week. I started
doing COMBAT in July of 2006, and it has become my favorite
cardio workout!
“The combination of exercise and eating right has
made a huge difference in how I feel. I have energy! Before
I started coming to the gym, I used to get winded just climbing
the stairs to go to bed. Now, I look forward to the next
COMBAT class!”

A
New Lease On Life
Dee
McLean |

“At age 44, I was
living a very stressful life. I was a successful owner of
a restaurant in Naples and a nightclub in Lewiston. It looked
like a wonderful life, but my health was suffering. I can’t
remember laughing or even smiling during that time. The
toll was five heart attacks with twelve cardiac procedures
and countless medications. I felt old and used up.
“Then, last August, I came to Fitness Stylz, and my
life changed! I take BODYPUMP, BODYFLOW and a program called
SilverSneakers. My life is a wonderful adventure now! Not
only have I been able to decrease the number of medications
I take, but the doses of what I still take have been decreased,
my blood pressure is perfect, and no more cholesterol problem.
“Best of all, I laugh a lot and have met wonderful
people!
“Tom has created a wonderful environment for you to
come and not only get into shape, but to expand and explore
all dimensions of your life. I am healthier than I ever
thought I could be again, but I am also very happy, and
I love to smile. Thank you, Tom, for creating such an incredible
place for growth!”

Losing
Weight,
Gaining a Healthier Lifestyle
|
|
Lynn
Souther |
| |
“Many
years have passed with yo-yo dieting, without much success.
The weight would come off, but I eventually would go off
the diet… and BAM! The weight piled back on, and then
some. I have never been a person who has exercised, or been
on any workout regimen. Actually, I’ve always been
quite intimidated by the thought of walking into a gym.
After all, only thin and fit people work out. There was
absolutely NO WAY a fat person such as myself would be caught
dead in gym. Or: ‘I can’t. I’m too busy.’
“Over the past few years, many friends and relatives
have talked to me about how much fun it is to work out at
Fitness Stylz. I never thought that people could
have fun exercising. With much self-discouragement, I told
myself- and truly believed- that there was no way I could
participate in any gym setting. I was simply too big.
“In October of 2005, I had received a two-week membership
to Fitness Stylz from a good friend. On many occasions,
I had spoken to this individual about trying the gym, although
I never had made my way through the front door. I had just
had surgery for a tonsillectomy. A few pounds had been shed
from my inability to eat. This now became my incentive to
finally do something for myself.
“The first few weeks were very challenging. I was
nervous. I had never exercised once in my life. For starters,
just walking through the door at Fitness Stylz
was an accomplishment!
“I started out with BODYPUMP and
slowly worked my way into the exercise room. I really was
enjoying myself. Could this really be FUN! In January, I
decided to get a little more serious and lose some weight.
I incorporated BODYPUMP three times a week,
and cardio (BODYSTEP, BODYCOMBAT
or stationary bike) three to five times a week.
“With much determination and encouragement from my
family, friends and Fitness Stylz staff, I have
lost 43 pounds, dropped five pant sizes, my cholesterol
has decreased 60 points, and my good cholesterol has increased
to 60! At my last physical, my doctor was amazed at my transformation.
My metabolism has increased enough that my thyroid medicine
can be decreased drastically.
“I have learned that one can’t think scales
are the answer. Yes, as my weight lowers, that’s great,
but the drastic drop in clothing size is amazing.
“I still have a lot of work ahead of me. At least
I have incorporated a healthier lifestyle. My entire family
attends the gym. We all enjoy the gym and are so glad we
gave it a chance.
“Now it’s your turn. Give it a try,
no matter what your ability, size or age. It’s worth
all that you’re willing to give yourself!”

“My
doctor told me in August of 2005 that I was a borderline
diabetic, and if I didn’t change my ways I would be
insulin dependent. I had been on medication for several
years for high blood sugar.
“I joined the gym in September of 2005. I’ve
lost 31 pounds, and I’m completely off the medication
for blood sugar.”
“I’ve also suffered from migraines that I took
medication for. Now I hardly ever take the medication, and
I rarely have migraines. I feel stronger and healthier than
I ever have in my life!”

My
Osteoporosis is Gone |

Grace
Denison |

“Several
years ago, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I began taking
hormone replacement therapy, which didn’t do any good
at all. In fact, my next bone scan showed that my bones
had gotten worse.
“A new drug did no particular good that I could tell.
I didn’t show any improvement on the next bone scan,
but at least, I thought, the medication might keep me from
getting worse.
“In August of 2004, I took my first BODYPUMP
class. I really haven’t missed doing two classes a
week ever since.
“In March of 2005, I went for a new bone scan, and
my osteoporosis was gone! What had I done differently since
the last scan? BODYPUMP! It’s a great
weight bearing exercise, and a lot more fun and effective
than walking!
“Clothes that I had stopped wearing because they were
too tight now fit. Of course, the cosmetic results are wonderful,
and I have lost some weight. But the real benefit of BODYPUMP
to me is my health and the health of my bones. It’s
hard to place a value on having strong bones. In fact, it’s
priceless!”

is a copious and effective support from the staff.

“I’ve
been a compulsive over-eater since I was five years old.
I’ve been overweight most of my life. There are very
few diets or diet products I haven’t tried at least
once, and never with any lasting success.
“In January of 2004, weighing well over 200 pounds,
I tried my first BODYPUMP class. In the
first eight months, I went from a size 24 to a 10/12!
“I became a BODYPUMP instructor in
August of 2004, and now I’m a BODYFLOW
instructor, too. I’ve continued to keep the fat off,
and my body keeps improving in ways that delight me—
improvements I never thought I’d achieve without invasive
cosmetic surgery. My blood pressure, resting heart rate
and cholesterol levels are excellent. With Les Mills programs,
you just keep getting better!
“In May of 2005, I turned 40 in the best shape of
my life! Thoughts of food no longer dominate my brain, which
to me is almost a bigger miracle than keeping the fat off
for over two years! I urge anyone who wants to have a stronger,
healthier, shapelier body to try BODYPUMP
and BODYFLOW. I’m living proof that
they work!”

“Before
I came to Fitness Stylz, I could not get off the
floor without a ball and tackle!!! And if something fell
on the floor, I had a hard time picking it up. I started
going to Curves to gain some range of motion. It helped
me tremendously because I could move more without getting
all kinds of cramps. But I decided I needed something more
aggressive than Curves and was going to join the UMF fitness
center. Then I heard about Fitness Stylz and the
real success people were having there.
“I took my first BODYPUMP class on
January 3rd, 2006. That was all I needed. Everyone was so
encouraging and non-judgmental, and they truly seemed happy
to see me. I felt at home there.
“Since my first class, I have lost three clothing
sizes! It’s given me a lot more range of motion, and
I have so much more energy. I love it! I’m a PUMPAHOLIC!
“This summer, I was able to do so many things I never
thought I would be able to do again. For instance, I go
to camp with my parents and we have to go by boat. I was
actually able to carry heavy coolers full of frozen food
and lift them into the boat, amazing both my parents and
myself. That was a great feeling! I also spent a day with
my daughter-in-law digging and planting flowers without
getting tired or having cramps, and recently I was able
to assist the mechanic working on my car, and I was able
to fit under the car!! I just keep improving!
“I know that I have a long way to go, but I am excited
about the progress I have made and what is yet to come!"
